“We can now say with credibility that we have kept 1.5 degrees alive. But its pulse is weak, and it will only survive if we keep our promises and translate commitments into rapid action.”
The COP26 held last year ended with these words. At the COP27 summit, which started in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, on Sunday and left its first week behind, the countries’ climate targets and emission reduction plans were reconsidered.
Among the important highlights of COP27 are the following:
• There is a global need for ‘holistic resilience’ in climate change,
• Low-income countries need lower green energy infrastructure costs,
• Each major city has a unique system that requires exclusive solutions.
There are many other outstanding issues to be covered by countries and their officials over the next few days, including money to help countries adapt to rising temperatures.
Progress on the challenging issue of loss and damage will also be critical to whether COP27 is a success or failure.
